Experience pays off for Priory's John Varley: All-Metro boys tennis player of the year
Priory junior John Varley is the Post-Dispatch All-Metro boys tennis player of the year.
All-Metro boys tennis first team
Max Chen, senior, Ladue
Chen finished second in Class 2 singles at state, losing in a third set match tiebreaker to player of the year John Varley of Priory. Chen won the prestigious Tournament of Champions singles title in April. In 2023, Chen won the Class 2 singles championship and was the top player on the state team champion Rams.
Jesse Hattrup, junior, Edwardsville
Hattrup played No. 1 singles for an Edwardsville team which cruised to a sectional title and finished in the top 10 in Class 2A in Illinois. Hattrup was named co-player of the year in the Southwestern Conference and teamed with Jade Dynamic for a sectional crown and ninth-place finish at state in doubles.
Colton Hulme, senior, Edwardsville
Hulme won 144 matches in his high school career. He shared player of the year honors in the Southwestern Conference with teammate Jesse Hattrup. Hulme won the sectional singles title and finished 11th in singles in the Class 2A state tournament. Hulme will continue his career at Greenville University.
Jai Patel, junior, MICDS
The No. 1 singles player for the Rams, who won Missouri’s Class 2 team state title, the program’s first since 2016. Patel finished second in singles in the Metro League Tournament and second in doubles in the Tournament of Champions. Patel and Owen Kizer lost in district tournament to eventual state doubles champions Aiden Qian and Charles Randall of Ladue.
Spencer Pompian, junior, Clayton
Pompian played No. 1 singles for the Greyhounds, who defended their Class 1 team title. He was the singles state runner-up, falling to Cole Horton of Savannah in the title match. Pompian also played No. 1 for Clayton’s 2023 team champs and won the consolation singles title that season.
John Varley, junior, Priory
Varley capped an undefeated season with a win over defending singles champion Max Chen of Ladue in Missouri’s Class 2 state singles championship. Varley lost the first set, his only lost set of the year, before coming back for the championship. The state title was Varley’s second. He and partner Preston Achter won the Class 3 doubles crown in 2023.
All-Metro boys tennis second team
Paul Castleman, junior, Webster Groves
Castleman won the consolation singles title in Class 2, winning four of his five matches. His only loss was against eventual champion John Varley.
Jade Dynamic, senior, Edwardsville
Dynamic and Jesse Hattrup won the sectional doubles championship and finished ninth at state, the best for any area Class 2A team.
Arjun Puri, junior, MICDS
Puri was the No. 2 player on the state champion MICDS team. He teamed with Max Padratzik to finish third in doubles in Class 2.
Aiden Qian, sophom*ore, Ladue
Qian teamed with Charles Randall to win the Class 2 doubles title. Qian and Randall won an exciting final in a third set tiebreaker against Kai Daudsyah and Winston Gao of Parkway West.
Charles Randall, junior, Ladue
Randall teamed with Aiden Qian to win the Class 2 doubles crown. Close wins were the key for the Rams duo, which saved a pair of match points in a district semifinal against MICDS.
Jasper Schmidt, sophom*ore, John Burroughs
Schmidt finished second in Class 3 state singles to Rob King of Rockhurst. Schmidt was the No. 1 player for the Bombers, who finished second to Pembroke Hill in the team tournament.
All-Metro boys tennis third team
Kai Daudsyah, junior, Parkway West
Daudsyah and Winston Gao finished second in Class 2 doubles state tournament.
Grant Fleming, junior, Highland
Fleming won the Triad Sectional singles title and followed with four wins in Class 1A state tournament.
Winston Gao, junior, Parkway West
Gao and Kai Daudsyah finished second in state, their third straight top four finish.
Joe Major, junior, Clayton
Teamed with Ruben Haroutounian to win the Class 1 doubles title for the team champion Greyhounds.
Ethan Stewart, junior, Triad
Partnered Joe Cass to win Triad Sectional and finish third in Class 1A at state, best showing in school history.
Josh Tiemann, senior, Oakville
Tiemann was undefeated in singles in the regular season and finished fourth in Class 3 at state.
