Scream 5 (2022) Release Date, Cast and What we Know - IGN (2024)

The iconic slasher franchise Scream is set to finally return on January 14 with, well, Scream - a direct sequel to the events of Scream 4 that will also serve as a jumping-off point for newcomers to the series that lays the foundation for its future. (Yes, even though it’s the fifth film in the series, it is simply being called Scream.)

While Scream 5 will see the return of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette, it will also be the first film not directed by the late Wes Craven. Instead, Scream will be helmed by Ready or Not’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, both of whom have said that Craven and Scream were the reasons they started making horror films.

To help fans get ready for Scream (2022), we’ve gathered everything we know about the upcoming slasher film, including details on the cast and crew, the answers to your biggest questions, all the trailers released so far, and so much more.

Scream 5 Release Date

Scream will be released on January 14, 2022.

How Can I Watch Scream 5?

Scream will only be available in theaters when it first premieres. While there has yet been no word as to when Scream 5 will be available on Paramount+, Variety did previously report that “Paramount will look to 30 days for most titles and 45 days for tentpoles.” This would lead one to believe that a movie of the caliber of Scream will arrive around 45 days on Paramount+ after its release in theaters.

How Long is Scream 5?

Scream has a runtime of 114 minutes or one hour and 54 minutes. This makes it the third-longest film in the series after Scream 2’s 120 minutes and Scream 3’s 117 minutes. For comparison, the first Scream and Scream 4 were both 111 minutes.

What is Scream 5 About?

Scream 5 is set 25 years after the brutal murders of the first film “shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro.” In this latest story, “a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.”

Scream 5 Cast, Actors, and Crew

Scream 5 is set to bring back many of the actors and characters from the original films, including Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers/Riley, and David Arquette as Dewey Riley. There will also be plenty of new faces to join the latest entry in the thriller franchise, including Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Jack Quaid, Mikey Madison, and more.

The returning cast members weren’t always a lock to reprise their roles, especially after the passing of Wes Craven. However, Campbell received a letter from Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett that showed how much care they were putting into this project, and that apparently helped her decide to return to the franchise.

“They wrote a letter honoring Wes in such a beautiful way, and they expressed that the reason they make horror movies is because of Wes and the Scream films,” Campbell told THR. “They also expressed how blown away they are at the idea of actually getting an opportunity to make one of them and how much they want to honor and respect Wes’ vision.”

While the first four Scream films were directed by horror legend Wes Craven, he unfortunately passed away in 2015 at the age of 76. For this latest entry, Ready or Not’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be leading the charge. The Amazing Spider-Man’s James Vanderbilt and Ready or Not’s Guy Busick wrote the screenplay and original Scream writer Kevin Williamson - who also created the characters - is serving as an executive producer.

How Many Scream Films Have There Been?

Scream (2022) is the fifth entry in the long-running thriller franchise that began in 1996. There was also an anthology TV series that had three seasons and ran from 2015-2019.

Is Scream 5 a Reboot?

While the latest Scream is meant to be a “relaunch of the franchise,” it is also a direct sequel to the events of 2011’s Scream 4.

Who Is the Killer in Scream 5?
