The Southern Poverty Law Center keeps tabs on active hate groups across the United States. The non-profit group has identified 47 racist, nationalist and radical groups that have chapters or members within New York State.

The SPLC's "Hate Map" shows where each of these groups operates across New York State, identifies which larger groups they affiliate with and whichgroupsof people they hate.

Israelite School of Universal Practical Knowledge (Syracuse)

Category: Black Separatist (anti-white, anti-Semitic)

The ISUPK is part of the Hebrew Israelism movement, and has been identified as a hate group due to "extremist" ideology and black supremacist rhetoric.

National Socialist Movement (statewide)

Category: Neo-Nazi (anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, anti-black, anti-gay)

The largest and most visible neo-Nazi group in the United States, the National Socialist Movement preachesviolent rhetoric against non-white Americans, and is notable for allowing members of other racist groups to join them and retain their membership to the other group.

Militant Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (statewide)

Category: Ku Klux Klan (anti-black, anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, anti-gay)

The oldest and most infamous American hate group, the KKK has several groups, including the Militant Knights, that operate in New York State. An estimated 5,000-8,000 Klan members are currently active in the U.S.

Aryan Strikeforce (statewide)

Category: Racist Skinhead (anti-black, anti-gay,anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant)

Racist skinheads arenotable for being a particularly violent segment of white supremacists. They tend to have shaved heads and a variety of racist tattoos. The Aryan Strikeforce is one of more than 20 smaller skinhead groups across the country.

Category: Anti-muslim

Radio Jihad hosts a variety of speakers that espouse anti-Muslim beliefs and calls itself "the voice of the Patriotic Resistance Movement in America."

Israel United in Christ (Mount Vernon)

Category: Black Separatist (anti-white, anti-Semitic)

TheIUC is a black, hispanic and Native American supremacist group thatobjects to its inclusion on the SPLC hate map. While not explicitly racist, their ideology is seen as "extremist," and part of their beliefs state that God is coming back to enslave and murder white people.

One of several anti-Muslim groups in New York State, that began growing in prominence after September 11, 2001.

The American Freedom Party is a white nationalist political party led by a number of prominent white supremacists. It has absorbed other white nationalist groups, and has designs on getting members in public office.

This church preaches that African Americans, not Jews, are the real descendants ofthe Hebrews of the Bible. They believe that white people are inferior, and that black people have "divine favor."

This think tankdescribes its mission as "to defend life and family at international institutions and to publicize the debate." It disputes its inclusion on the hate map, which the SPLC justifies due to the groups support of global anti-LGBT efforts.

Category: Neo-Nazi (anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant)

This group is originally a nationalist, right wing Greek political party that has spread outside the country. They have engaged in violence against refugees, and are known to use anti-Semitic graffiti.

The CCC is a modern reincarnation of the White Citizens Council from the 1950s and 60s, which was organized to battle desegregation in the South. They are vocally opposed to "race mixing."

Firm 22 is a side-group of the Vinlanders Social Club, and refers to supporters and associates of the group, like wives, girlfriends and prospective members.

This group proclaims itself to be a modern continuation of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense from the 1960s to 1980s. It claims to be engaged in a people's war against white capitalism.

New York has the greatest number of active hate groups after California, Florida and Texas.

According to the SPLC, "all hate groups have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics." These beliefs can be shown throughcriminal acts, marches, rallies, speeches, meetings, leafleting or publishing.

The SPLC's list of hate groups was compiled using publications and websites of the groups, citizen and law enforcement reports and news reports.
