47 hate groups are active in New York State: Where are they, who do they hate? (2024)

The Southern Poverty Law Center keeps tabs on active hate groups across the United States. The non-profit group has identified 47 racist, nationalist and radical groups that have chapters or members within New York State.

The SPLC's "Hate Map" shows where each of these groups operates across New York State, identifies which larger groups they affiliate with and whichgroupsof people they hate.

Israelite School of Universal Practical Knowledge (Syracuse)

Category: Black Separatist (anti-white, anti-Semitic)

The ISUPK is part of the Hebrew Israelism movement, and has been identified as a hate group due to "extremist" ideology and black supremacist rhetoric.

National Socialist Movement (statewide)

Category: Neo-Nazi (anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, anti-black, anti-gay)

The largest and most visible neo-Nazi group in the United States, the National Socialist Movement preachesviolent rhetoric against non-white Americans, and is notable for allowing members of other racist groups to join them and retain their membership to the other group.

Militant Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (statewide)

Category: Ku Klux Klan (anti-black, anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, anti-gay)

The oldest and most infamous American hate group, the KKK has several groups, including the Militant Knights, that operate in New York State. An estimated 5,000-8,000 Klan members are currently active in the U.S.

Aryan Strikeforce (statewide)

Category: Racist Skinhead (anti-black, anti-gay,anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant)

Racist skinheads arenotable for being a particularly violent segment of white supremacists. They tend to have shaved heads and a variety of racist tattoos. The Aryan Strikeforce is one of more than 20 smaller skinhead groups across the country.

Radio Jihad/Global Patriot Radio (statewide)

Category: Anti-muslim

Radio Jihad hosts a variety of speakers that espouse anti-Muslim beliefs and calls itself "the voice of the Patriotic Resistance Movement in America."

Israel United in Christ (Mount Vernon)

Category: Black Separatist (anti-white, anti-Semitic)

TheIUC is a black, hispanic and Native American supremacist group thatobjects to its inclusion on the SPLC hate map. While not explicitly racist, their ideology is seen as "extremist," and part of their beliefs state that God is coming back to enslave and murder white people.

Foundation for Advancing Christian Truth (Bronx)

Category: Anti-Muslim

One of several anti-Muslim groups in New York State, that began growing in prominence after September 11, 2001.

ATLAH World Missionary Church (New York City)

Category: Anti-LGBT

All The Land Anointed Holy has used it's church letter board to advocate killing gay people by stoning.

Nation of Islam (Harlem)

Category: Black Separatist (anti-white, anti-Semitic, anti-gay)

The Nation of Islam is one of the wealthiest organizations in black America, and believes in innate black superiority over whites. It's leader,Louis Farrakhan, has compared himself to Hitler.

Israel United in Christ (Bronx)

Category: Black Separatist (anti-white, anti-Semitic)

A second branch of the IUC, located in the Bronx.

American Freedom Party (New York City)

Category: White Nationalist (anti-black, anti-immigrant)

The American Freedom Party is a white nationalist political party led by a number of prominent white supremacists. It has absorbed other white nationalist groups, and has designs on getting members in public office.

Category: Black Separatist (anti-Semitic, anti-white)

This church preaches that African Americans, not Jews, are the real descendants ofthe Hebrews of the Bible. They believe that white people are inferior, and that black people have "divine favor."

Tony Alamo Christian Ministries (New York City)

Category: General Hate (Anti-gay, hateful towards non-Christians)

This group has been defined as a Christian cult that only acceptstheKing James Versionof theBible, and forces its members to turn over all their possessions.

New Yorkers for Immigration Control and Enforcement (New York City)

Category: Anti-Immigrant

This group actively opposes immigrants with prejudiced rhetoric at protests and rallies.

Center for Family and Human Rights (New York City)

Category: Anti-LBGT

This think tankdescribes its mission as "to defend life and family at international institutions and to publicize the debate." It disputes its inclusion on the hate map, which the SPLC justifies due to the groups support of global anti-LGBT efforts.

Golden Dawn (Astoria)

Category: Neo-Nazi (anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant)

This group is originally a nationalist, right wing Greek political party that has spread outside the country. They have engaged in violence against refugees, and are known to use anti-Semitic graffiti.

Category: Anti-Muslim

This right wing anti-Muslim blogger has cracked into the mainstream, and is regularly cited as a reputable source by both mainstream news sources and right wing blogs and commentators.

Category: General Hate (anti-immigrant)

This publishing company is included on the list in part for publishingFrank Borzellieri's book "Lynched," which focuses on anti-immigrant policies.

Council of Conservative Citizens (New York City)

Category: White Nationalist (anti-black, anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic, anti-LGBT)

The CCC is a modern reincarnation of the White Citizens Council from the 1950s and 60s, which was organized to battle desegregation in the South. They are vocally opposed to "race mixing."

Aryan Renaissance Society (New York City)

Category: Neo-Nazi (anti-Semitic)

This smaller neo-Nazi group originated in Texas and New Jersey, and has a phoenix image with a lightning bolt as its logo.

Firm 22 (New York City)

Category: Racist Skinhead (anti-black, anti-Immigrant)

Firm 22 is a side-group of the Vinlanders Social Club, and refers to supporters and associates of the group, like wives, girlfriends and prospective members.

Black Riders Liberation Party (New York City)

Category: Black Separatist (anti-white)

This group proclaims itself to be a modern continuation of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense from the 1960s to 1980s. It claims to be engaged in a people's war against white capitalism.

Bosch Fawstin is a cartoonist who made the SPLC map due to his controversial art depicting the Muslim Prophet Muhammad.

Blood and Honour Social Club (New York City)

Category: Racist Skinhead (anti-black, anti-Semitic)

Blood & Honour is an international coalition of racist skinhead gangs with a presence in New York City and around the world.

This white nationalist blog is part of the alt-right movement, and is known for popularizing the practice of putting "echoes" (triple parentheses) around the names of Jewish people on social media.

This publishing company produces hate-literature across genres on topics like Nazism, fascism and white supremacy.

All Eyes on Egipt Bookstore (Brooklyn)

Category: Black Separatist (anti-white)

This bookstore exists in several U.S. cities, and sells works produced by Dwight York, who the SPLC identifies as a black supremacist cult leader. York is currently serving a 135-year sentence for numerous child molestation charges.

Jewish Task Force (Fresh Meadows)

Category: General Hate (anti-Muslim)

This extension of the extremist, Jewish supremacist ideology called Kahanism,raises money for the claimed purpose of funding Jewish settlers in the West Bank.

ACT for America (New York City)

This anti-Muslim, pro-Trump group dedicates itself to battling what it describes as "the threat of radical Islam." Critics, including the SPLC, say it is a central player in a broader movement to spread Islamophobia.

One of several KKK groups operating in New York State, this one on Long Island.

ACT for America (statewide)

Category: Anti-Muslim

Apart from it's local presence in New York City, ACT has active members that have participated in rallies elsewhere in New York State.

The Daily Stormer (statewide)

Category: Neo-Nazi/White Supremacist (anti-Semitic, anti-black, anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant anti-gay)

The Daily Stormer is a website popular among neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other members of the alt-right. The website relocated to the dark web in August of 2017 after domain registrars rejected it for insulting the victim of a car ramming terror attack at a rally in Charlottesville, Va.

Wolf Tyr Productions (Holbrook)

Category: Hate Music (anti-Semitic, anti-black)

Wolf Tyr productions produces heavy metal music with racist and fascist messages.

Nation of Islam (Rochester)

Category: Black Separatist(anti-white, anti-Semitic, anti-gay)

Another Nation of Islam chapter, this one located in Rochester.

One of several white nationalist groups operating in New York State. This group has been known to distribute a pamphlet called "White Voice," which has praised Donald Trump along with referencing white supremacist literature.

Another Nation of Islam chapter, this one located in Buffalo.

About hate groups

New York has the greatest number of active hate groups after California, Florida and Texas.

According to the SPLC, "all hate groups have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics." These beliefs can be shown throughcriminal acts, marches, rallies, speeches, meetings, leafleting or publishing.

The SPLC's list of hate groups was compiled using publications and websites of the groups, citizen and law enforcement reports and news reports.
